Ceiling Unbound

After living in their home for over a decade, the clients' son was leaving for college. The couple saw this as a moment to reimagine the space they had built their life in - gently updating it to reflect who they were becoming, while preserving the spirit of what it had been.

Rather than maximizing the allowable building envelope, the clients chose to work within the existing form, retaining the original sloped roof that had defined their home for years. The focus was on improving quality over quantity - creating openness, flow, and a sense of renewal.

The primary issues were a low kitchen ceiling and a fragmented circulation through the public areas. While keeping the bedroom wing intact, we opened up the shared spaces, allowing the ridge line to naturally define the living and kitchen zones. A modest 150-square-foot addition created space for a dedicated laundry, a powder room, and a full bath for the secondary bedroom.
