The In-Between ADU

This feasibility study explores how an ADU can transform circulation, access, and outdoor living on a tight San Francisco site. By bridging the main house and detached garage, the design creates a new connection to the rear yard, an elevated dining terrace, and a dedicated guest suite above the garage. A series of subtle level changes shape indoor–outdoor transitions and frame views of the landscape. The study reflects BLUR’s integrated approach to architecture and landscape.

As we started studying the site, a few opportunities quickly stood out.
Creating a Direct Connection
By placing the ADU between the detached garage and the main house, we can finally give the family a direct connection from their main living floor to the backyard—a simple change that will make daily life much easier.
Outdoor Space on the Roof
The roof of the ADU becomes a comfortable outdoor dining terrace. Adding planting and seating creates an inviting space that the family can step out to every day.
Guest Bedroom Above the Garage
Part of the ADU sits above the garage to create a quiet bedroom level for guests. It’s private, close by, and makes great use of an area that’s currently underused.
Working With the Existing Levels
The site slopes, so the design naturally introduces a few level changes:
a flat walkway from the main house to the ADU
These changes help the spaces feel connected, offer moments to pause and look into the garden, and make the home feel more open to the landscape.
Option 01 - Entry Pavilion

At BLUR, we design the spaces in between—where architecture and landscape meet. Even small moves, like a shift in level or transition from space, can reshape how a home is experienced every day.
Option 02 - Sunken Seating
